荒川 修作

ARAKAWA Shusaku Biography (1936 - 2010)

1936: Born in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan.

1956: Entered Musashino Art School (now Musashino Art University), later leaving before graduation.

1960: Co-founded the avant-garde group Neo-Dada Organizers with Ushio Shinohara, Genpei Akasegawa and others, and held his first solo exhibition, Another Cemetery.

1961: Moved to New York, where he established the base for his artistic practice.

1968: Received the Grand Prize at the 8th Contemporary Japanese Art Exhibition and participated in Documenta 4 in Kassel, Germany.

1970: Represented Japan at the 35th Venice Biennale and became internationally recognized for his Mechanism of Meaning series.

1995: Completed the Site of Reversible Destiny – Yoro in Gifu Prefecture and expanded his Reversible Destiny projects into architecture and urban planning.

2010: Passed away in New York at the age of 73.
